Moments with Marilyn, Time in the Garden
By Marilyn Zink, publisher.editor, The Herbal Collective magazine
I was standing there in a long line-up at my local Home Depot, sweating in the hot sun, reflecting to myself that there were probably better ways to spend my long-weekend.
On the other hand, I was glad to get my supplies for my garden, or should I say, gardens. I’ve been getting my vegetable garden ready, planting more seeds in my herb garden as well as getting a little garden ready for my daughter.
I told her she had to help, but at 8 years old, she was only interested in helping until a friend came over. That left me to do most of the work. Oh, well. I planted herbs such as Woolly Lamb’s Ears, Sage, Chives and Rosemary in her garden as well as some flowering herbs such as Borage and Evening Primrose. I am interested in seeing how the Evening Primrose looks, as I have never grown it before. Apparently the yellow flowers open only in the evenings.
While I didn’t think my garden looked that showy, my friend who came for a visit had a different opinion. “This looks great,” she said, eyeing the Sweet Woodruff that was filling one section of my garden quite nicely with its delicate white flowers while my culinary herb garden was thriving in another section, and in the flowering herb garden the lavender was making a nice border in a half circle around the birdbath.
“It’s why I like a theme to the garden,” I told my friend. “It keeps everything nice and organized and easy to find.”
You can plant a herb garden with a theme too. It’s fun and makes your garden look beautiful and it will be the envy of your friends.
