Moments with Marilyn, Herbs for Christmas
By Marilyn Zink
Whenever I think of Christmas I always think of the sights and smells, particularly the smells.
Especially the smells. The sweet aromas of cinnammon, cloves, nutmeg and allspice. The tangy taste and scent of ginger.
Those warming herbs also help circulate the blood and keep us warm on cold winter days.
Foods made with them, like your favourite cookies, help make the holidays bright. My daughter and I have plans to make some cookies with her favourite cookie cutters this holiday season. One of my favourite cookies is the gingerbread man - I love his cocky little attitude but we all know how his story ends!
Then there’s the heavenly scent of sage and thyme, often used in stuffing for turkey.
I don’t eat turkey but I particularly love any stove-top stuffing made with those herbs.
There are many herb and spice flavoured drinks this time of year too. I love cinnammon flavoured teas (I’m drinking one now) as well as mulled wine.
Peppermint is another favourite at Christmas and of course we usually think of it used in candy canes. But it was also important to help in digesting the rich meals that people eat. Those warming herbs like ginger and cinnammon are also useful for the digestive system.
Then there are the crafts you can make with herbs. Herbal wreaths, table centrepieces or swags. These are great fun to make and don’t take that long.
Or you can use herbs to make specialty, heartwarming gifts for friends and family members - gifts they won’t get in the mass market and gifts they will surely appreciate.
You can find out how to do all of this and more in my ebook A Herbal Christmas. It’s a new product available in the internet marketplace and I’m excited to let you have first crack at it. Go here now www.herbalcollective.ca/christmas-ebook.html.
If you’re getting stressed with the hectic pace of everything that needs to be done before Christmas, why not do what I do. Take a long soothing healing bath.
I love using essential oils in the bath and they really help - whenever you’re feeling stressed, tired or depressed. That’s because these healing oils enter the bloodstream and work to bring the body back to balance. Some of my favourites are lavender, geranium and bergamot.
