Belching and Flatulence

By Marilyn Zink

Today I’m writing about two things that are common in our society, and it has nothing to do with this being Feb. 13 on a Friday, which incidentally is also my birthday.

I’m writing about this today because it ties in with the theme of cleansing and allergies for the MarchApril’09 issue of the Herbal Collective. In the past week I have interviewed a woman who does colon hydrotherapy and also spoke with another person about allergies.

So I really got to thinking how common it is for people in our society to have problems with the digestive tract and the colon. Belching and flatulence are common expressions of those issues.  But our society often makes fun of this and movies have been produced where flatulence is often the butt, pardont the pun, of the joke. This particular type of bathroom humour appeals to pre-teen and teenage boys.

If you’ve ever grown up with boys (I have four brothers) you will have personally experienced that. Several years ago our son had his 13th birthday and invited several young lads who stayed overnight (oh, joy).  After pizza and pop, they went downstairs to the theatre room where they played video games and watched movies until late (very late).

I went downstairs to tell them something and almost made it to the room when I heard a loud bodily noise which starts with “f’ and ends with “art.”  Then I heard a comment, “That was rude.”  This was followed by some laugher which was followed by more bodily noises which was followed by huge guffaws of laughter. I decided not to enter the room.

While we can laugh about this, as adults we should not be experiencing belching and flatulence on a regular basis. It can be an example of a toxic overload of bacteria in the gut as well as be indicative of toxins built up in the colon or liver.

Doing a herbal cleanse as well as cleansing with colonics or other therapies can aid the body to operate more efficently and effectively.  Get your hands on the upcoming MarchApril09 issue of the Herbal Collective where we take a good look at how cleansing can heal the body.

Gas buildup usually happens when there is not enough good bacteria in the bowel. The bad stuff, candida, thrives with foods like pizza and pop which in turn crowds out the good bacteria. When there are healthy colonies of good bacteria, and if we chew our food properly, 20-30 chews per mouthful, the problem will correct itself. Another basic rule of eating is to never eat fruit with protein. That will cause gas too as these foods break down at much different rates. Remember we can make wine out of fruit! It ferments. It will also leave your stomach in about 20 minutes provided there is nothing blocking it from leaving.

Add to the probiotics a good heavy metal detox, in severe cases a colonic or two to get a lot of the bacteria out and you’ll have a healthy gut in no time. Look for a probiotic that doesn’t need refrigeration (your body isn’t cold) and that contains the basic 13 strains you need.

A good source for those who are not aware of why flatulence happens:
