Summer Cuts, Aches and Sprains
By Marilyn Zink
It’s barely summer and both my children have already had accidents, cutting themselves unintentionally.
First, my daughter had found an old razor in the yard and unintentionally sliced her left thumb. I didn’t hear any screaming. I just came outside to find her sitting on the edge of the lawn, crying softly, while drops of blood spattered on the grass.
‘Stay calm,’ I told myself. I wondered where the Rescue Remedy was. Rescue Remedy is a combination of 5 flower remedies that work on the emotions, calming the nerves in times of stress and trauma.
Well, I couldn’t find the remedy right away as I was in a hurry to get my daughter’s thumb looked after. Fortunately, she didn’t need any stitches, as skin glue did the trick.
Then, just last weekend, my son slipped and cut his right hand on a sharp rock while hiking to a waterfall. One of the youth leaders he was with called me on cell phone to tell me about it.
‘How bad is it,” I asked. “Oh, it’s bleeding pretty bad,” he replied. I pictured gobs of blood dripping from my son’s hand. But there was no point in imagining the worst until I had a chance to see him.
Once again I had to take another child to the doctor. My son needed stitches in his hand which required getting a needle. At first he resisted. The doctor looked at me while I looked at the doctor.
She went off to see another patient while I dealt with my son. Clearly, I had my work cut out for me. I fervently wished I had my Rescue Remedy with me in my purse, though I doubt that he, at 16, would have taken it.
Eventually I managed to convince him to get the needle and get the stitches done. Now I’m going to get my Rescue Remedy and have it handy in my purse. So the next time something happens, I’ll be able to use it to calm anxiety and nerves. Even if I’m the only one using it.
