How to Plan an Herb Garden
By Marilyn Zink
Just as the foundation of a house is important in constructing the house, so is planning an herb garden.
When you take the time to plan an herb garden, you will be rewarded later on.
While it may take some time, thought and effort to plan the herb garden, it will also save you headaches when your garden is established.
You will have less weeding to do, less work to do over and more time to actually enjoy your herbs. Planning an herb garden really involves five steps.
Step 1: Determine where the sun shines at different times of the day so you know how much light your herb garden will get. It’s okay to have some areas that are shady as some herbs prefer partial shade.
Step 2: Determine the amount of space you will devote to the herb garden. Will it be a small space or something more elaborate? Many herbs can be grown in a small space.
Step 3: Determine the design you will choose for your herb garden. There are many interesting design ideas apart from a straight bed with herbs on either side.
Step 4: Determine what type of soil is already available and if the soil will need to be improved. While some herbs like poor soils, others like a richer soil.
Step 5: Determine the materials that will be used in the construction of the herb garden. This could be something you do yourself or a job for a landscaper.
Once you have the herb garden planned, then you can move on to the enjoyable task of choosing the herbs for the garden and watching them grow.
An herb garden can be pleasurable as well as useful. It can be your sanctuary, a pleasurable escape from a stressful world. Learn how to plan your own Herb Garden or discover more about herb gardening and useful way to use those herbs.
